The Cape Fear River drops a few feet at this spot. And not just running over rocks, but suddenly dropping a few feet in a few places. Perhaps some would call spots like Lanier Falls "rapids". And they are "Class I" rapids. All of the rapids in this section of the Cape Fear River are called "falls". Others may call features like these "shoals".

Accessed by the Campbell Creek Loop Trail and the Lanier Falls Spur, you can watch the falls from the south bank of the river. From the parking lot take the Campbell Creek Loop Trail to where it crosses Campbell creek. Follow the split to your right (it follows the creek downstream) to the Lanier Falls Spur.

Note: Although the Campbell Creek Loop Trail is classified as 'moderate', most of the trail is very easy to negotiate. It is long (5 or 6 miles around the loop depending on your routing). If you are not used to walking be sure you have good walking shoes and take plenty of time.
