Cataract Falls
Lewis and Clark National Forest
(southwest of Augusta MT)

Cataract Creek tumbles some 80 feet down the rough walls of Elk Canyon, - one of the many contributors to Elk Creek. The flow of Cataract Falls varies from heavy in the spring - and after heavy rains - to little more than a trickle in August.

How to get there:

  • US-287 northbound makes a right turn in the middle of town, coming in on Manix St and turning north on Main. Instead, you turn left on Main amd follow Main St (south) out of town.
  • This becomes County Rd 435 and follows the Elk Creek uptream, past the Smith Creek Rd turnoff, (on your right - about 3.7 miles).
  • 2 miles more and County Rd 435 bends to the left and Elk Creek Rd continues following Elk Creek. You stay to the right and follow Elk Creek Rd.
  • 2.1 more miles and you pass Swallow Canyon Rd (on your right).
  • Cross Elk Creek (1.2 more miles) and, finally, come to the intersection with Hay Coulee Rd (1.4 more miles).
  • Turn to the right drive to the end of the road at Cataract Creek. You will see the Cataract Falls pullout and sign (on your left - about 6.6 miles from the intersection).
  • About 5 miles from the intersection of Elk Creek Rd, you run off the end of the pavement but it is still no problem for a family sedan.
