High Shoals Falls
(northwest of) Helen

Height:  25ft/100ft    Stream Flow: Medium

Difficulty: Moderate  Trail Length: 2.4 miles

 

There are two falls here. Upper High Shoals Falls is also called Blue Hole. It is unique for the huge log that is stuck in the midst of the falls. It is about half a mile hike to the upper falls and an additional half mile to the lower falls. At one point in the trek, you walk through a beautiful bowl-type valley that is quite enjoyable.

How to get there:

From I-85 northbound (e.g., from Atlanta):

• Head north on I-85 to exit 113, the Gainesville split (about 27 miles from the I-75/85 split in Atlanta).
• Take the left split and follow I-985 all the way to exit 22. (about 22 miles).
• Turn left at the foot of the exit and follow US-129, through Gainesville, to its intersection with GA-75 in Cleveland (about 25 miles).
• In Cleveland, on the north side of down town, turn right onto GA-75 (Stop Light)
• Follow GA-75 through Helen. (make sure to check your gas before leaving Helen). Continuing on 75 approx 11.5 miles. 
• 2 miles past Unicoi Gap (Close to the top of the mountain), look for FS-283 on your right.
• Proceed 1.4 (bumpy) miles to small pull off to the left.   You will ford a small creek, in your vehicle, just off the road.

Note: These are mountain roads with lots of blind curves and ups and downs. There are legal passing zones but, please, be patient.
