Hemmed In Hollow
Ponca AR

Hemmed In Hollow is reputed to be the largest waterfall east of the Rocky Mountains and west of the Appalachian Mountains. Whatever, at 200+ feet, it is significant - at least in the winter and spring when there is a good flow of water over the precipice. In the summers and autumns, though, it isn't much more than a trickle. Located in the Buffalo National River area (between Ponca and Compton) which, in itself, is worth the trip. This is rugged mountain country with a stretched out panorama of this part of the U.S.A. as it used to be centuries ago.

From I-40, take the AR Hwy-7 (exit 81 at Russellville) and head north on 7 to Jasper and the junction of Hwy-74. Turn left (west) and follow 74 to Ponca. At Ponca, turn right on Hwy-43. The trailhead is 3 miles out of town on your right.

From Harrison, head north on US-65/412 to the junction of Arkansas Hwy-43. Turn left (south) and follow 43, through Compton, to the trail head on your left.

This four-mile, moderately difficult, trail will lead you to the Buffalo River, the beautiful limestone cliffs and the waterfall.
